MG MGA - Odd Problem This Morning

I've been replacing the fan and the water pump on my MGA the last few weeks (interrupted by cataract surgery) and finally got it bolted together enough to hold water so I started it up to see it it leaked under pressure. After a few minutes the engine started missing, then backfiring thru the carburetors. I shut it down, checked plug wires and distributor...nothing wrong so I started it again and again there was a steady backfire thru the carburetor. I'd had the problem before in my 49 TC when I broke a rocker arm so I pulled the valve cover off to find #5 push rod sticking up along side the rocker arm. It was too bent to reuse so I've ordered new ones but I have no idea how it could have jumped from under the rocker arm...any ideas?

By the way, the new plastic fan was blowing massive amounts of air when the engine was running!

Maybe a stuck valve? If stuck open, the rocker could stay in the down position, which would allow the push rod to flop all over the place. then the valve closes and pushed the rocker back while the rod is off to the side.

Good thought, Steve...a bitch to troubleshoot after the fact though.
