MG MGA - New Wiring loom

Hi All,

Have no wiring at all in my '58 Roadster. Was going to order a new loom from a specialist company.

I have installed a later 1.8 MGB engine that obviously has an alternator/oil cooler etc along with a Ford 5spd gearbox.

Before I commit to ordering the loom, is there anything else I need to bring to their attention when they make the loom for me in terms of differences ??

Thanks
A Stojanovic

You can get new wiring looms off the shelf. I don't see the need to have one specially made up. I run the same installation as yourself. I just followed Barney's process for altering the wiring at the alternator and in the control box - it's a minor task involving swapping connectors and altering the connections in the box. If you are running the 5-bearing 1800 you will need the odd bit of wire for the electronic tachometer, but I would have thought having a loom made up for just one wire a bit unnecessary.

Aleks,
I second all that Steve has said.

The standard loom is all you need but I would recommend that you fit one single extra length of (yellow) wire running from the alternator output terminal to the battery connection at the starter switch.

This is an extra wire in addition to the yellow output wire you will find in the original loom that was designed to take the output from the generator.

Your alternator can occasionally pump out a much greater amperage than your generator and this extra wire will take away any chance of overloading the original wire.

If you have a look at Barneys MGAGURU website there is some great stuff on there on this subject.

You can buy lengths of braided insulation which looks very much like the original wiring loom to cover up this extra wire.
It would be a shame to have one piece of yellow wire spoiling the look of your new loom.

I have just noticed that Moss are offering discount on new looms at the moment.

I assume that your car is a 1500 model.
You might consider using a 1600 wiring loom and fit the 1600 turn indicators.
Not original but a good safety measure in today's traffic.
