MG MGA - Need a crank pulley
The failure of my dynamo pulley (see earlier thread) also caused severe damage to the crank pulley. I ordered a replacement from Moss, which turned out to significantly different from the original, to the point that in my application (with a Judson double pulley too) it was unsuitable, and has gone back to Moss Darlington. I contacted NTG, who sent me an original (used) pulley. Unfortunately that appears to have been lost in transit. They don't have any more. So can anyone out there offer me a good straight crank pulley for a 1500, 1600 or early B (they are all the same)? Thanks Dominic

Dominic, I've got two engines, but unfortunately, they came on a pallet, and the pulleys are bent up because the engines were on top of each other. Sorry.

Dominic, Will a MGB harmonic balance type pulley work? John
John Progess
Dominic: I have one that appears to be in great shape that I bought on eBay a while back. You can have it for what I paid and shipping. Please email me if you still need one. Steve

Dominic, If you can, use the early MGB harmonic balancer. One from an 18G GA or GB should fit. It will solve the cracked crankshaft issue. Possibly exacerbated by the Judson. Doug

Steve Please can you let me know offline what you want. John, I'll measure the height of the flange on the standard A one, and would be grateful if you could measure the height of the Harmonic balancer B one. Thanks Dominic

Dominic, I used the MGB harmonic balance type pulley on my 1500, it must be slightly larger diameter because it has covered up the timing points on the chain cover, so static or stobe timing is an issue, how can I do the timing another way? Regards Dave

The Judson pulley requires the MGA pulley--it indexes off of the rivets holding the pulley together. --Carl

Carl I understood that the early B pulley is the same as an A one. Is this not correct? Dominic

I replaced my shakey, loose, riveted MGA pulley with a MGB harmonic pulley. It's a direct replacement. It is an easy procedure that takes less than a hour to do. The B pulley is far superior, which explain why BMC made the improvement. Don't consider the A pulley, even if Steve is sending his spare for the cost of postage. It isn't worth it. I'll give you an B pulley installation tip. I purchased a newly milled pulley from Moss. There is no etched in marker aligned with the key to determine TDC. So before you pull the old pulley off, remove the spark plugs and turn the engine to TDC and make a mark on the new pulley and install. Otherwise, you won't know how to time the car. I didn't do this because I didn't think of it at the time. I dropped a pencil in the spark plug hole and turned the crank back-and-forth with my wrench until I felt the piston plateau out. I can't think of the size of the wrench you will need off the top of my head, but I think its 1 5/16. I was fortunate. I went to a used tool trading port and found such a wrench with an open-end spanner on one end and an off-set box on the other end. You will need both types of wrenches for this job. The off-set box will enable you to get inside the depressed, counter-sunk pulley to get a grip on the nut. You will definately need the box to tighten the nut with the B pulley because the nut is completely shrouded by the pulley. This wrench used is not easy to find, even in the USA. You can purchase a new wrench of this size from interenet tool vendors, but it is expensive. But the currency trading value is in your favor. If you have any specific questions, email me. This operation is still fresh in my mind. (My participation on the board has dropped off considerably over the past four years because I just can't remember how to do things since doing my frame-off back in 1997.)

The problem with this BBS is that a poster cannot edit his post for any reason: spelling, grammar, content, etc. Anyway, after you put the B pulley on, then you make the TDC mark in the pulley. Obviously you cannot do this accurately with it off, unless to place the A and the B pullies back-to-back and make the mark. But I'm sure you would have figured that out, anyway.

Ugh! That's mooshupork7@hotmail.com Kindly disregard the email address posted above. It has a "&" where it should have a "7"

Dominic, I'm 95% sure all MGBs used a balancer-type pulley. We've got a 3-main MGB in the shop right now and it has a balancer. While I agree with everyone that the MGB pulley is a superior unit, Dominic connot use an MGB pulley with his Judson supercharger pulley because the Judson pulley is made to key onto the rivets on the MGA pulley. I know that Judson expert George Folchi has made pulleys for MGB balancers. However, I imagine that due to the fact that MGB balancers are thicker than MGB pulleys, Dominic would have to go from a 2-belt drive for his Judson to a 1-belt drive or the crank pulley(s) would hit the steering rack. I hope this helps, Carl

Like Authur, I agree it would be nice to be able edit. I said "MGB balancers are thicker than MGB pulleys" when I meant "MGB balancers are thicker than MGA pulleys" Carl

Can you put an MGA hand crank nut on an MGB balancer on an 18V in an MGA? Thanks. Steve.
Steve Meline
Yes Steve the MGA crank nut works on either. Doug

Crisis over - the pulley from NTG turned up in the post today - it must have been held up at customs. It's pretty straight (much straighter than the old one) and after a run through the parts washer (a proper one, not the dishwasher) and a coat of paint, it looks the job. Only now I have discovered that the woodruff key is also shot. (Sigh). Just hope there's no more to discover.....
