MG MGA - MGB Water Pump

Anyone tried to fit a later B water pump with the bigger impellor?

As far as I can see, it just needs the front of the block boring out, but not sure if there is enough meat at the bottom.

Any comments?

I believe it is possible for an MGA block to have this done. I did this to a 3 main 1800cc MGB motor that was fitted with a 5 main Moss supercharger into an MGA.

The 5M pump impellor is on a different rotation axis, as well as being larger. it would take a LOT of special machining to create the later snail chamber shape in the front of the early block. I have comparison pictures of the differences, but have never posted them because the proposed modification seems rediculously difficult.

One tech article I saw in the NAMGAR newsletter some years ago gave dimensions for machining the thickness of the front hub on the 5M pump to use it on the 3M engine. Apparently no one checked to notice that the 5M pump cannot be mounted on the 3M engine.

Barney, thanks for that. I thought as much.

That saves me another job!!
