MG MGA - MGA Wiring Colours - Searchable Database

I found this and think it'll be so useful that it deserves its own thread to make it easy to find in the Archives.

101 different wire colors? Not in an MGA. This appears to be a list of color codes for some newer model of car with more gadgets and accessories. It may be a generic list covering a wide range of models and model years. Many of the described colors and functions have nothing to do with MGA, and some of the descriptions are wrong for MGA.

It did give me a momentary flash if inspiration though. Maybe I will copy it and prune it and modify it to be correct for MGA. It would be a nice suppliment to my simplified wiring diagrams.

Works for me, Barney. Would sure make it easier to sort out the wiring rats nests that are under the hoods and behind the dashs of some of the cars we buy.

Its not for specific MGA it actually says "lucas" colours, of which an MGA is one car that used Lucas wiring.
I thought it was a great reference
Bob (robert) I am turning? yes I once owned an MGWasp!!

Okay, I have the MGA specific wire colors on line. This is for the standard parts only as shown in the factory shop manual wiring diagrams, not not including add on accessories like radio, cigar lighter, rear fog lamp, flash to pass, or any relays beyond the 1500 turn signal relay. I count 27 different wire colors. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/cc102.htm

If someone can offer up the official MGA wire colors for factory optional accessories, I may consider adding those to the web page. Please do not offer non-standard wiring or MGB colors for any accessories which were not factory issue for the MGA. No headlight relays please. I don't know if the factory ever offered an optional maually switched back up light for the MGA. I would be interested in factory prescribed wire colors (for the MGA only) for radio, cigar lighter, rear fog light, a relay for dual fog lights or dual driving lights (or both) or flash to pass, all of which I know were factory options.

My '56 roadster has the original cotton covered wiring loom. Many years ago my brother-in-law and I got fed up with trying to determine the colours of each wire, so we "numbered" each connection. (wiring numbers can be purchased as slip on, or stick on, items)

Now I can read the wiring diagram (enlarged to 11 x 17 courtesy of the Eastern New York MGA Club) I have laminated, and the numbers correspond to the diagram. Sure makes tracing a fault or a wire a lot easier.
