MG MGA - MGA Twin Cam Launch Date?

Gents !!!

What was the date and location that the Twin Cam was launched and
shown to the press?

How many cars were there?

Also does anyone have any long lost photos of that day?

Cheers <MARK>

According to 'Call it MGA' the TC was officially introduced on the 14 July 1958.

Me again Mark.

Just been browsing a book titled 'MG Sports Cars'. It contains copies of the Autocar road tests of the period. The one for the Twin Cam is dated 18 July 1958 and contains various pictures of PMO 326 (the first TC?): 3/4 front, 3/4 rear, engine compartment, boot, seats and interior. A full page on technical detail and a 2 page description of test drive etc.

I can scan it if you wish.

Thanks Steve,
I wonder what other magazine reporters were present that day?

Here's a quote passed onto me.

Graham Robson in his book "The Mighty MGs" writes, "By the time the Twin-Cam was revealed, on 16 July 1958, its existance had become something of an open secret among the motoring press, and in the industry as a whole."

Still could use a photo or two from the press pack that was available on that day and possibly identify how many cars were there.

I beleive 501 & 502 were there, but were there others?

Motor Magazine published the twin cam review on that exact same day.
Wednesday, 16th of July 1958 ...Strange.

I would doubt the could go to press with photo's the exact same day.

Anyone got this magazine scanned in that they could send me please.

Thanks

Mark,

I have an original copy of "The Motor" of 16th July 1958. I already have scans, but they are a bit fuzzy (JPG files).
I will send them. Tomorrow I might try and scan them as PDF's. They may be clearer.
I also have the Autocar magazine, the date is a couple of days different.

Thanks Mick,

I see now how they (Motor Mag) made that date, as there are no actual pictures of the cars. Loaded here.

I believe there were some actual photo's in the press pack though? Anyone got that photo(s)?

Also was it test day:
Monday the 14 July 1958 as per 'Call it MGA'
or
Wednesday the 16th July 1958 as per "The Mighty MGs"

I guess that's a detail I can live without though.

It is not jpg per se that is causing the fuzziness. I use jpg all the time but with the quality set relatively high. The higher the quality the larger the file. Also, jpg is a "lossy" format to opening and resaving will result in a lower quality end result. Try rescanning using either a high quality jpg or a compressed tif format. Either one should give good quality result.

Both The Motor and Autocar had their copies on the news stands a couple of days before the publication date (at least in London where I can remember waiting for them with bated breath every week). I would have thought that they went to press at sometime in the week prior to the publication date.

Opening and resaving .jpg files will not result in a loss of quality. Opening, changing in any way and resaving will.

Did it float?

So it's sort of agreed that chassis:

501 (PMO 326),
502 (PMO 325) &
530 (PMO 946) were that day, but others possibly.

I've asked BMIHT for pic's of the day, but nothing back yet.
I would have thought that a day like this would have resulted in loads of pictures floating about.

Would anyone have any other contacts that I could ask?
