MG MGA - MGA Radio Antenna
Is someone know wich type of antenna was fitted on MGA when it had a radio installed . Maybe i can find a correct replacement to be close of originality . Any idea ? |

Since the MGAs didn't come with a factory installed radio (if one was installed it was done by the dealer), the only thing you need to wory about is period style. Basically, just a plain old segmented arial (ask any Brit, bugs have antenna, radios have arials) will do. Cheers - Dave |

There is a version I have read about that fits under the floor and is therefore invisible to all but the mechanics |

Jules Before you start drilling that hole and wrecking the body, you should know that you will never hear a radio with the hood down. If you need it up - drive something else... Enjoy that exhaust note. Pete |

Pete You must drive in a very noisy neighborhood. I have a relatively new AM/FM radio in my 58 with speakers under the dash. Still quite audible at 70 mph, top down, commuter traffic on the local Interstate. Can I hear every word or note. No. More like listening to a very distant AM station in "the good old days", still enjoyable. FWIW Larry |

David You don't want to ask any Brit about aerials. I well remember many an old car bearing a metal coat hangar stuck into the hole where the aerial shaft had broken off! Steve |

I too have an AM/FM/CD player in the dash with 2 speakers mounted in an home built enclosure on the transmission cover just beneath the dash in front of the gearshift lever. Good, clear sound (compared to an original in dash speaker) easily heard at 70MPH. No stereo separation but good quality. If you aren't too much of an "original" person, consider adding a motorized antenna. This way the dust/rain covers will fit better. Always had a problem with my 1st MGA with a fixed arial. |

I've got a jpeg of the Smiths Radiomobile manual page that shows *exactly* where to mount the antenna. I have no idea how many dealers actually followed these instructions... :-) If anybody wants a copy send me an email at the address on the left. |

David , I just send you an Email about the jpeg for the antenna location . Jules . jdes@sympatico.ca |

David, Thanks for making this available ! I've sent you a request also. The only other reference I've found is the "exploded" picture of the MGA Coupe on the cover of the Haynes manual. Best regards, Chuck Mosher |

I've sent copies to Jules and Chuck, as well as a couple others. If anyone else needs one, I process the queue every evening after work. :-) |

I recommend a hidden antenna for keeping it from being broken and ease of taking a car cover on and off. They look just like any other one when they're up. Motorized is not necessary, but could be fun. Be sure it's gonna work on positive ground. If you're worried about originality, it's gotta be positive earth, right? |

David , Thank you very much for the picture , it will surely help me to put the antenna where it's suppose to be . Thank again , Jules . jdes@sympatico.ca |

I have posted the Radiomobile Aerial installation instructions for the MGA here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/accessories/at112b.htm Thanks to David B for supplying a scan of the original instruction sheet. |
