MG MGA - MGA Overdrive Gearbox

Interesting overdrive gearbox for the MGA on Ebay. Anyone heard of this particular professional modification before?

There was some discussion in Safety Fast in the Magnette register about five years ago about an overdrive conversion using the unit from a Humber Hawk. It needed a new gearbox casting and a couple of us expressed interest but not enough for a new run.
It's supposed to fit the Magnette transmission tunnel without any significant modifications.

Hi Guys
I had this Gearbox fitted in MGA 1600 for two years without any problems and it worked well.
Two mods 1) ease the tunnel about 6-8mm with a scissor jack 2) modify the handbrake supports brackets and of course the prop shaft is shorter.

The gearbox is the same as any "B" series and uses the tail shaft to drive the O/D. The tail shaft casing is simply cut back and the O/D is welded to the original casing.

The O/D is a "D" type from a Rootes car or TR2/3, Standard Vanguard etc.

Nobody seemed interested during the auction on ebay although I had a few disbelievers, some of who were down right rude.
It is simple to replicate my magnette has one so the dimensions are available, it is a hell of mod so simple.

About 40 were built in the fifties only about 5 remain as far as I can tell. They were
built for Fords,Standard 8/10,and BMC

Interesting idea, and good to know. TR2/3s had A type o/d,..Spits/GT6 had D types.
