George, no idea where the "Y" comes from, but GHN2 is MGA/1600/Tourer/Mk2
If this was an Australian assembled car, Garry Kemm will have a better idea.
Gary Lock

Hi Gary, it's not a MK2 only disc's on the front and the tail lights are not MK2

Regards
George Mills

It's an Australian paint code:
Carnation Red (Monza Red) - 09864-00014 - MGA 1955-62

Yes, YGHN2 is correct format for Australian 1600 car (not MK-II)

Hi George,
YGHN2 is correct for Australian assembled MGA1600.
BMC Australia used 'Y' to indicate Australian assembly.
The car number you quote is actually 8/97634/1038.
It is explained as follows:
8 = BMC Australia code for 1960 model year assembly.
97634 is the Abingdon assigned chassis number.
1038 is the Australian build number.
16GAUH/28613 is the engine number and is correct for your car.
My records show your car was one of a batch of 20 MGA CKD kits dispatched from the KD Department, Cowley, UK on 5th September 1960 and was assembled by PMC, Enfield, Sydney on behalf of BMC Australia late November 1960. Original colour Monza Red.

And for those wanting to see a picture of a Monza Red car, here's the most famous of them all outside the MG dealer in Addis Ababa!

Thank you all for the information very much appreciated

George,

Garry has given you all information you need but I would like to correct something in your earlier posting.
You say that it is not a MK2 because it only has disc brakes on the front.
The 1600 MK1 and 1600 Mk2 both only had disc brakes on the front as standard.
The Twin Cam and Deluxe had four wheel disc brakes.
However, they were offered as a competition option on the 1600 and this commonly became referred to as the Deluxe.

And of course the Mk2 was a 1622 motor.

Thank you, I have noted all info and I am happy
My car was first registered 20/02/1962
I wonder if anyone has the part numbers for the bush and bolt top of clutch pedal

George,

I recommend that you obtain a Workshop Manual and a Service Parts List.
You can usually find them on eBay.

One diagram attached.
Another to follow.

Mick.

George,

Although there are only minor differences between the 1600 MK1 and the 1600 MK2 (mainly the General Data) I attach the link for the 1600 MK1 Handbook.
