MG MGA - MGA Gearbox identification

Help! I have MGCs and MGYs in my stable, but while clearing out the store I have come across a gearbox which is tagged as "MGA". Never owned and MGA so don't know when or where I aquired it. Question; how do I ID it. It has "IH 3150 AM" and "4A58" in the main casting.
Any help will be appreciated.

Our authority on most authenticity issue is Clausager's 'Original MGA'. On gearboxes he says:

"The gearbox number was stamped adjacent to the dipstick. Apart from stating that the gearboxes were individually numbered, it is unfortunately not possible to be more specific because the gearbox numbers were not listed in the production records for individual cars. It seems that gearboxes had four-figure numbers with varying letter prefixes, but it has not been possible to work out the system, if there was one."

My gearbox (chassis 55600) has the serial D5817 beside the dopstick.

Thanks to those who have responded and sorry for the delay in acknowledging your help.Barney, the website you directed me to is very interesting. Thanks.
Found the number on the gearbox I have and it is M4573 and has the "low starter" position. Now all I have to do is find a new owner for it to make some space in the garage.
Thanks guys for your help.
