MG MGA - MGA cost a new kitchen!

The return to my youth - buying a 1600 A last year - cost me a kitchen upgrade this month - you know the type - new cupboards, appliances, granite top and glass splash back. I am interested to know what others have had to cough up to the "one who must be obeyed" for their fun?

Not too much, as the car cost only $125 (in 1971) plus rebuild cost. That rebuild cost for the second time around is somewhere about $8000-$10,000. If you were to pay me $1.00 a hour for labor, then the price would be in the stratosphere!!!!!

I remember when we had only been married a short time. I called her at work to find out where the cheque book was. She asked why. I told her I wanted to take some of our wedding using wedding cars tunbridge wells gift money and buy my second MG. She told me where it was, and the MG was in the drive when she got home. After 30 plus years she just accepts my weakness for MGs.
Life does not get any better than that.

Jim, I must have married a relative of your wife. I constantly have MG parts strewn about the house, including a few dirty distributors on the kitchen table as I sit here typing. My wife's not only ok with it, she expects it and appreciates my enthusiasm. She has even opted to forfeit hew new kitchen for a while to let me spend the money on new parts and equipment for distributor remanufacturing. All this after she bought me new leather upholstery for the B for Christmas! Who could ask for more?

Jeff.
As always there is more to the story. After many years of my MGA sitting in the back of the garage in boxes,I decided to sell it. I put it in Hemmings. After several weeks with out a call my wife told me she was telling everyone it was sold. I asked what are we to do with it now. She said, finish it. If I did the work she would find the money. We finished the ground up in the spring of 2004.
It's nice when someone asks who did the work and I reply I did it all myself. But now everyone knows that is not true.

My wife doesn't share my interest in MGs at all, but she is pretty supportive of my efforts and allows me a 'budget' each month for my hobby. Last year we had our home enlarged, she got an expanded kitchen/dining area and I got a new workshop. Certainly can't complain about that. Now I just need to put some more hours in the A if I ever plan on finishing.

I have had experiences more like Mike's. I bought 2 MGs a few years ago. The first, my 1960 MGA project cost me a living room suite. My 1966 MGB driver cost me a bedroom suite.

We are in the process now of getting a new (to us) house for my wife. I think it should be worth at least a TC.... I am not sure she sees it that way.

Safety fast!

Wife rang me when I was out of state for work saying she had two pieces of news for me. The first was that she was pregnant with our first child and the other was she found the A that I had always wanted. My son is now 15 and I still have the car. Can't get rid of a wife like that either.
