MG MGA - MGA 1600
Would anyone happen to know where I could find and buy an MGA 1600 engine in the US?

What, exactly are you looking for??? A rebuilt or rebuildable engine. I have a complete engine that I would like to sell but, it needs rebuliding.

An engine which is totally complete with carbs, starter, dynamo, water pump etc. but which needs rebuilding would be acceptable. Perhaps you could email me direct if you are able to give me further information. Thank you.

I would suggest that finding a complete one, ready to rebuild, will be difficult and expensive. Buying pieces to assemble will be much easier. A block here, a cylinder head there. Start with on line salvage yards and ebay. I've never looked for MGA parts there, but I've found lots of stuff at www.car-part.com

You may have to buy a basket case MGA--that's what I ended up doing. Car was total rust--but the engine only had 30 K miles on it since rebuild and I got lots of extra parts out of the deal as well.

Trying to buy a complete engine a piece at a time is a royal PITA. By all means look for a complete engine, or maybe buy an engine less head and a head assembly separately. If you're not stuck on originality, the early 18 head (with larger valves) works on the 1600 block and gives performance similar to the 1622 engine. Maybe I'm just "lucky" because I keep my ear to the ground a lot, but a few years ago I bought two complete 1600 engines for $100 each, both rebuildable, one in MUCH better condition than the other. Little more than a year ago I picked up a 1622 engine at our local swap meet, $100 for engine less head after "16" the head was already sold for $100 (pity). Sorry these are all gone now. I do have a spare 1500 engine with 18 head (and fast street cam). In a pinch I can supply details for a LARGE all British bone yard near Appleton, Wisconsin, which has always had anything I needed for the MGA. I have no idea what they might want for an engine (maybe more than I'd like to pay). There seem to be still plenty of MGA parts cars around, so a complete engine should not be a big problem (no, I'm not a broker). If you're not in rush, keep an eye on eBay, check out swap meets, visit web sites of MG and all-British car clubs. Barney
