MG MGA - MG Engine Age

I have a 1959 MGA that evidently has an early 1960's engine in it with the seerial number of 18GA-U-H 10996. How do I find out exactly when this engine was produced? I had real fun trying to find the right water pump for it.

This post originally posted in MGF section by mistake by a Mr Penrod. My apologies if I got his name wrong.

Bob,
There should be a circilar raised casting boss with the month, day, year of the casting. It is directly below the oil filter just above the bottom of the block. Have a good day!

The 18GA engine was used during the middle 2/3 of the 1964 model year.

The MGB 1964 model year, started in August 1963 with engine 18G engine in car #27278. Then changed to 18GA engine for cars #31021-#48765 (starting with 18GA/UH/101 about October 1963). I don't know what engine was used for cars 48766-53634 (maybe back to the 18G engine). The 1965 model year started in October 1964 with car #53635 and the first 5-main engine 18GB/UH/101.

Your engine 18GA-10996 is 10896 units into a run of 17745 engines. That makes it car #41916 (aprox), which is 53% of the way through 1964 model production, or roughly May 1964.
