MG MGA - MEV Spares

Has anybody in the UK bought any spares from MEV Spares, who trade on ebay under the name jumblemaster? I need a new water pump which they list for £28 plus £6.50 for postage, which is a very good price compared to Moss and MGOC.

Hi Robert

I have bought from them in the past and cannot recall any problems. As usual a company working from home low overheads reflect a low sales price.

The water pump listed by the MGOC is actually slightly cheaper at 27.95. I think the MGOC postage is also a few pence less.

I have been looking at water pumps because the one on my car is starting to get noisy. After reading the warnings about breaking the bolts on Barney's website I will be interested to know how you get on.

I ordered a new water pump from MGOC a couple of weeks ago, but when I tried to fit it the raised collar on the facing plate was fractionally too big which meant that it wouldn't fit into the recess in the block. MGOC are currently looking into this for me as the one they sent was the first of a new batch and there's a possibility that the whole batch is the same. I'll keep you all posted when I know for sure what the outcome of their investigation is.

I find it is better to establish a history with one vendor than shopping around based purely on price. I accept that I buy more parts than the average owner, but if I have an issue, I know I am going to be treated on the basis of a long-term business relationship, not just a "one deal" basis. I have particular praise in this respect for Moss Europe and B&G Classics. All others I just treat as suppliers with stock when the preferred ones are out of stock. This policy has served me well in over 30 years of MGA ownership. Sometimes the cheapest deal is not worth the hassle!

It helps to know where the likes of Moss, MGOC & B&G are buying from.

I always dealt with the sources for parts and although I couldn't match the big boys for volume discounts I still got the same parts considerably cheaper.

I haven't come across Mex parts before but I would guess the pumps are County and made in India. I used to buy most engine parts from XRN (County brand).

Cams I bought direct from Piper.

Where quality wasn't good enough - e.g. County brand head studs, I worked with MSC to have parts made in the UK to better specs, e.g. hot rolled threads rather than machined threads.
