MG MGA - Manifold & Distributor Studs

I need to order studs to mount my exhaust & Intake manifolds as well as my distributor.
I have the two outter studs that connect the exhaust manifold but I don't have the inner 4 studs. According to Moss there are 2 short studs and 4 long studs, but it is not clear which size I need. Also, Moss does not seem to sell bolts to mount the distributor to the engine. Please help!!

Hi Gerard. if I'm not mistaken, there have been problems with Moss manifold studs breaking at low torque values. The original studs are fine thread at both ends. What I did was went to a local auto parts store. I purchased American made studs that are fine thread on one end and coarse thread on the other. The American studs were the same lengths as the MG originals. The fine thread end,of course threads into the cylinder head. The coarse thread end retains the manifolds with Coarse thread nuts that you purchase. (I used stainless steel nuts to prevent seizure) The American made studs are tough and take proper torque without breakage. Hope this helps! Glenn

Hi again Gerard. Sorry, I forgot to mention stud lengths. The short ones appear to be 1.75" and the long ones appear to be 2.0" long. The studs appear to be about .25" in diameter, perhaps a tad larger. Take an old stud, (or the cylinder head) with you, to check for correct stud thread pattern. Hope this helps. Glenn

Gerard,

APT sells an ARP stud kit for the manifold. Works great, takes the correct torque values. APTFAST.COM

I'd find some distributor bolts/studs at the local H&E or ACE hardware store.

Good luck,

I also noticed in the mga maunal that there is a 'yoke' (washer) that goes with the inner 4 studs. What do these thing look like? I may still have them but am not sure.

Glenn,
Did you go to a national chain or a locally owned store?

Tom,
APT is a tough site to navigate. Is there a '800-number'?

Hi Gerard. I went to a national chain parts place. (Partsource in Ontario, Canada) The manifold washers you refer to are different than standard washer. They are relatively thick, and one side of the washer has a shallow "conical shape" around the circuference, that flattens out near the center, where the hole is drilled. Moss motors and other supplier likely carry them. cheers! Glenn
