MG MGA - last word

After talking to a local ex MG A owner who has removed two A G/Boxes from the back, I have decided this is the way to go. Apparently the only difficulty is the 10 small bolts that fasten the wide plate to the fire wall. they can be rusted in.This plate won't let the top of the bell housing come back. I'm not going to disturb them and am going to cut the plate at each outer end and bend it up to give clearance. bend it back on assambly and weld it togather again.. Ala G/B removal on '50s Standard Vangards. For what it is worth Sean

Just out of curiosity, have you ever tried pulling the engine and tranny out of the front? I'm not really understanding whether this is your first time doing it, or you've done it before, hated it, and now want to try a way other than pulling the engine.

Yes Mark I have pulled the engine and G/ Box before and never again. Maybe I was just too used to working on Auto Trans. in American cars where there is room to work. I no longer have workshop facilities, engine crane , hoist and YOUTH ! This way I can work 95 % from the top a couple of hours at a time. I'm waiting for warmer weather to tackle the job. Yes, it does get cold in sunny Australia. I'll post a report when the job is done ,as a retired professional mechanic I should be able to judge which is the lessor of two evils. Sean
