MG MGA - Judson Question

The car runs great with the judson, with one exception, when I try to start the car after it sits for several days it takes alot of cranking then it sputters to life with bellows of smoke. Onces the smoke clears it runs great again. How is the Marvel oil building in the intake mainifold? There is no vacumm to draw in the oil while not running, there is no dripping seen in the sight glass on the oiler while not running. Any ideas?

Dominic will undoubtedly be along to answer your question more much definitively, but this describes exactly the Judson's cold start-up performance in my P1800. After all, the vanes rotate as soon as you turn your engine over, at which time you should see a pressure change in your manifold--allowing you to accumulate your share of Mystery Oil before the ignition fires.

My trick is two full depressions of the gas pedal, then start without choke. It's because the long inlet manifolds allow fuel to "puddle"in the bottom. The MMO is not the issue here.

If you look at the thread below I am in the process of getting an SU manifold made, so that I can ditch the fixed jet Holley and move to a variable jet that will allow better running all round.

Because it is running very very rich from the pool of fuel sitting in the inlet manifold

In the meantime, as Dominic points out you can tune the Holley for better starting by setting your mixture screw at idle to get a clean idle. You will not get as much oomph at higher RPMs, but better starting.

We can all do better when Dominic rolls his SU project out for us ;-)
