MG MGA - Is PB Blaster any good?

I have seen PB Blaster advertised as a miracle penetrating oil, is it any good? Don’t think it is available down under?

Mike,
I've never used it but seeing a couple of videos of other people's tests with various penetrating/releasing agents it seems most good penetrating/releasing sprays (or drip-ons) or other agents seem to be around the same results within a range.

My personal favourite is PlusGas but its made by a different lot now and might not be as good as it used to be or that might be my imagination.

Rapideeze used to be very good but not made for many decades, whether the formula is used in another brand I don't know, don't think so.

I don't like standard WD40 but its better than nothing and some seem to find it good(ish?). The WD40 company has taken over in the UK and taken over another UK company brand that I liked as a lubricant/releasing spray GT85. WD40 also own the 3-in-One brand (bit like Coca-Cola taking over loads of sweet fizzy drink brands).

Different people seem to get different results and different people have different favourites, including homemade or popular concoctions.

I've always found PlusGas to work on rusty fixings but the secret is something some don't posses, patience. Use time and patience and let the chemicals do the work. Clean the area, apply releasing agent, leave to soak in as long as possible, overnight at least, more if possible, then first try to tighten the fixing to break the rust/crud seal before trying to loosen. If this doesn't work repeat the whole process and try again, and if necessary a third time. I've always found it to work by second time at least.

Some prefer to go straight to heat, not always possible for all of us or appropriate but they seem to make it so, often because they don't have the time available and/or the patience.

PB Blaster has been my go-to penetrating oil for years. It replaced both WD40 & Liquid Wrench as I used up the remaining cans of these products. I know its always a personal decision on what works best, but PBB is what I use all the time to help break frozen parts and provide a bit of lubrication on everything from the MG to the tractor and many other power tools.

It is a great product!

During the 2004-5 restoration of our A PB Blaster was a central part of my disassembly. It worked when all others failed. Only down side is the horrible smell.

I've been using it for years with good results, although we don't normally see the kind of stubborn fasteners here in So Cal that most of you guys do. WD-40 is not a penetrating oil so PB will definitely out-perform it. The only thing I use WD for is wiping down machine tools to protect from rust. It's useless for anything else. But PB seems to work better than the other store brands I've tried, like Liquid Wrench. I do hate their nozzles though. It comes out way too fast, and they break easily.

Mike, it is available here in Australia. We can get it at Aitkens Welding Supplies in QLD. BUT, I've tried it many times to see if it stands up to all the claims, and NO I'm sure it is no different than INOX or anything else available here...in other words, no miracle help with rusty bits. Just my results anyway.

There you go differing experiences and opinions but whichever you choose to use if you also apply the secret technique of time and patience I bet results will be improved.

Steve,
I'm with you about standard WD40 but I was surprised how well it done in a test when left to soak, IIRC still towards the bottom of the results.

WD40 is a brand now over here appearing on lots of different lubricants so it all get a bit confusing. Someone I know got good results with a cheap labelled own-brand, problem with that is they might change supplier and next lot might not be as good, or it might be even better depending on with company got the contract to supply.

Thank Gary, that is good enough for me I won't pursue. I have tried the 50:50 mix of acetone and ATF with some success.
Cheers

W(ater)D(isplacement)(Formula)40. Good for rust prevention. Not recommended for nut busting.

Look up the engineering report on rust breakers and you will find that the 50/50 acetone/transmission/power dteering ffluid is far above any of the commercial ones.
