MG MGA - Hot weather for the MGA?

All you MGA owners in Adelaide, South Australia. Are you out driving your cars today to test the engine cooling system? It was 45.5 C today (113.9 F).
A drive up the Adelaide Hills road to Mount Lofty might be an idea.
Any Twin Cam owners to try it? The car should be OK, but the same cannot be said of the driver.

Only 43C in Melbourne at present (5pm) and I'm about to drive off in the 'A' for my run with Hash House Harriers! What's that about mad dogs and ---- !!
Cheers, Barry

Barry

What's this about using the A with the Hash House Harriers? Have your knees finally given in?!! What is the car like in the fields and on footpaths?

Steve, Happy to hear from you! I'm surprised your keyboard is not frozen over. On! - On!

The final figures are in from the Government Bureau Of Meterology for South Australia yesterday. The highest shade temperature (in country towns) was 48 C (118.4 F).
Will have to look at that website I saw earlier for fitting air conditioning to a MGA. Should be a few customers!

Wouldn't it be very unpleasant driving an open top car when temperatures are above body temperature i.e. 37 C. Might even be dangerous above 40 or so? You can get heat stroke when the body is around this temperature. You would certainly dehydrate rapidly at speed. Have there been any reported cases in Australia of deaths whilst driving at such temperatures? Just a thought. Mike
m.j. moore

mj not necessarily, at speed you will get cooling by evaporation so the body temperature can be expected to drop below ambient. The perfect solution is to drive fast and rehydrate with fosters.
J H Cole

Hmmmmnn,
I've been used for a lot of things, but never rehydration...:)

G. Foster
G T Foster

Yes. I know about evaporation but there must be a maximum rate at which sweat can be pumped out through the skin pores and if you are going at 60 or 70 with passing air at 45 C it could be that the body is not far from overheating. Whatever, sweating at that rate can't be pleasant.
You'd be better drenching yourself with Foster's and not drinking it. Mike

Mike, That last bit is heresy! The only way to use Fosters is INTERNALLY!!

On extremely hot days in Australia I always drive with the top up. The overall effect of driving on days over 40 C (104 F) is that the passing air does not cool you, but leads to increased body temperature.
Perspiration does not seem to help.
I have not heard of any deaths from heat stroke while driving, but accident statistics do show an increase in accidents on hot days.

M.J.
the question that needs to be asked is what the humidity is when the temperature is that high. Temperature/Humidity affects the rate of persperation much more than temperature only.

The UK has taken bit of a snow battering this last week, but nothing like the normal weather you get in North America and Canada.

I was hoping to post a picture of loads of snow on my MGA. Unfortunately, the North West of England (Lancashire in particular) has not seen ANY of the white stuff. All very boring, but quite amusing seeing the soft south of England collapse in crisis with their Chelsea Tractors (4x4s) unable to cope with a foot of snow.

Steve

I was hoping for a report of the effectiveness of the new windscreen in a blizzard.

This part of NW England has actually seen quite a lot of snow by UK standards. One thing I have noticed is my MGA does not reverse well in snow or ice. Backing up our drive, which is on a slope, even after I had cleared it involved lots of wheel spinning but forwards is fine. Is this typical, as if so I wouldn't have thought they had much chance of getting out of snow drifts on the Monte Carlo Rally?

5 MGAs are heading north tomorrow afternoon to take part in MGCC Victoria sprint and regularity event at Winton Motor Raceway on Sunday (200 kms north of Melbourne). Tomorrow's predicted temp is 45 deg C(113F)- if it gets there, it will be the hottest Feb. temperature ever for Melbourne - wish us luck!

Classic for rear wheel drive I would guess, with relatively little weight over the back end.

The sports windscreen is still going fine. I have to be a little careful using the windscreen wipers in damp and dirty (salt and sand) conditions to avoid scratching the plastic screen. In wet conditions some rain comes over the top of the screen as there is no top rail, but I keep a towel draped across my lap. On the plus side I have removed the dead weight of the hood and side screens, and this helps with performance. It also creates a lot more storage space behind the seats.

Today is just the right 'hot weather for the MGA' - sheepskin jacket with collar turned up, woollie hat over the ears and thick gloves. 35 degrees, but that's farenheit. Not a cloud in the sky.

Steve - you are a hard man. I haven't taken my car out for 3 weeks because of the ice. Nice and sunny this morning and around zero C - but too much salt - cheers Cam

An update for you guys on the other side - Melbourne recorded its hottest temperature ever today 46.4 deg C (115.5 F).
Bush fires all around Melbourne - major road closures - we were due to head north to Winton Motor Raceway this afternoon for the club sprints but are locked in Melb.
We may or may not get there - looking for a weather change. Some unofficial reports but temps as high as 49 C in some areas - even us mad Aussies aren't prepared to drive open MGAs 200 kms in those temps.

Just been watching the terrible news about the very bad bush fires and large loss of life. My sympathy to you all down under. I hope you are all ok. I had an email from Barry on the north side of Melbourne; he is ok. I believe the worst is further to the north.

Can you imagine 800+ homes lost, 131 dead and it continues!
Two of my runmates lost their homes, one lost his pristine MG, but, we are all alive to tell the tale.
Can't bring myself to drive anywhere at present.

Hi Barry

Yes, it's dreadful. Main headlines on all our news channels. Glad you are ok.

One shouldn't really ask in times like this, but what MG was it?

Steve
Steve Gyles

Steve, It was a very expensive, high spec MGB. Would never have been a Concours car because of the modifications, but a real "boy racer" and, of course, it was RED! And Kenny really loved it! But we are still here and that's what counts. Our HHH run group are passing the hat around for him on Wednesday - to show our solidarity as much as anything.
