MG MGA - Hi gear sierra gearbox adjustment

My car has the sierra 5 speed gearbox fitted which works well combined with the std 4.3 diff. The only gripe I have with it (aside maybe, from 2nd gear being a little on the low side) is that sometimes when I start the engine there is a loud clonk from the left side of the transmission tunnel. It also happens occasionally when the engine is cold and running roughly.
I presume it is caused by the reduced clearance of high-gear engineerings bell housing in the tunnel.
Has anyone had the same problem and tried with any success to adjust the gearbox position to cure this.
Can this be done and if so, is it safe to do without putting stress onto the drive train?
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Cheers
Colyn

Colyn, on my 5 speed I have lots of clearance on the left side of the transmission tunnel but only 1/8" between the speedo angle drive on the right hand side. I gently levered the gearbox as far over to the left of the mounting as possible and that fixed the problem. I also had interference between the gear lever extension and the top of the transmission tunnel housing even though I bashed it out quite a lot. I lowered the gearbox at the rear mounting by 1/4" with a steel spacer and that fixed the problem. I think there is enough tolerance in gearbox mounting brackets for you to lever the rear of the gearbox over enough to correct the problem.
