MG MGA - Goodwood

Hell,
Is anyone planning to be at the Goodwood Revival this weekend?

I will be there on Saturday, but sadly without my A ... nothing wrong with the car, but my partner is coming too, and she is currently seven months pregnant so is not too keen on the prospect of junior arriving early thanks to the MG suspension.

Hope to see some others there.

I remember my wife coming for rides in our first MGA to bring the baby "on". The baby is now 35. He came out of the maternity home in the "A" and on my wife's knee (I would not drive her Ford Popular).
It was very much part of our life at the time (TFY 20 - can't trace it) but it had to go, replaced by a Morris Marina saloon.

I bought an identical "A" in 2000 and went to Goodwood Revival 3 years ago. Great day out. Only one other MGA there. Make sure you go in the "special" parking area. You will be in good company and not so far to walk to the entrance.

Not really my choice, Alan - don't think the other half is too keen on going in the A at all costs ... and I'm not quite ready to 'bring on' the baby yet - still got two rooms to paint in the house!

I've been to all the Revivals and will be there Friday and Saturday in the Pre '66 Car Park in a red 1600 (ESK718) if the weather allows it. If you can fit the lady in - it really helps to get in the Pre '66 car park by 8.30 and you will be really close to the entrance (to save the old feet)

Absolutely nothing to do with Goodwood, although I used to go there as a kid in the 50s to watch Stirling Moss the D-Types in the 12 hour race, but the expectant mum bit reminds me of the history that came with my car.

The previous owner said that my MGA was his first car. He took it to high school, dated his future wife in it, got married in it, took expectant wife to hospital in it and took wife and first child home in it. He then went on: "Got divorced and the bitch had the car in the settltment".

I often wonder if they also conceived in it!

They won't even let you leave the hospital nowadays unless you have a properly fitted baby car seat - shame really - would be nice to show off the new arrival in a slightly more dramatic fashion!

So can it be done - is there a way of fitting a standard car seat into an A?

I can recall clearly at least one occasion when my dad loaded our entire family of 5 into the '59 for a drive. Years later he told me that was actually far short of the true carrying capacity of the MGA, since his fraternity brothers used to sit on the fenders as well as piling into the cockpit. I concluded long ago that there are probably things he did with my car that I am just better off not knowing.

I have taken my son in the A aged around six months he was in a standard child's car seat held in by the seat belt. His toes were just above the scuttle and he enjoyed wiggling them in the wind.

More recently I've taken him out with a booster seat.

It took a bit of fiddling to get the static seat belt to fit instead of the inertia reel that they expect.

I think that they have recently (or are about to) change the law in the UK to mandate child seats for small people.

Sorry Pete ... didn't spot your car on Saturday - a bit of a miserable day on the weather front, but a great event. There must have been about a dozen As in the pre-66 car park on Saturday alone. A good day.

Richard
Thanks for looking. We went in the "A" on the sunny Friday when there were quite a lot of "A's", but Saturday was not for A's was it. Had to go in the eurobox and parked slightly further away that day!
Nice to see the MG EX181 with the hatches off and LeMans MGA SRX210...and 8 Spitfires...and...had a lovely couple of days.

Yes ... saw EX181 in the paddock - nice to see it getting a bit dirty, but missed seeing it on the track. Maybe see you next year?
Richard Ross

Richard
Excuse me... EX181 does not go on tracks getting dirty...!
EX181 was the 1959 Bonneville Salt Flats record breaking mg that Phil Hill & Stirling Moss drove. It was the fastest MG ever at 255 mph on that twin cam 1500cc supercharged engine.

The Le Mans SRX210 was on the track...
