MG MGA - Gnurled Nut

Hi, I am not quite sure now the gnurled nut in the dist works. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks, Neal Turner

Neal - the knurled nut provides a couple of degrees of adjustment for the timing without having to rotate the distributor. If you look at the body just behind the nut, you should see a double ended arrow ,with one end marked A and the other end R, for advance and retard. In practice, the nut should be rotated such that the adjustment is about at the middle of its range so you can move the timming forward or backwards as a fine adjustment. Cheers - Dave

Neal:
There should be a small flat spring riding on the knurled part which causes a 'click' when you rotate the nut.
Eleven 'clicks' advances or retards the spark one degree at crank, rotating the nut in the directions David described.
It's very handy to use on the road--my BGT started pinking on the hills near Watkins Glen and I managed to back off the timing to make it happier.
