MG MGA - Gearbox rear seal replacement
| 1958 MGA 1500 stock, except this is not the original gearbox. GB engine.
Much dripping of oil tracked to the rear seal of the gearbox. I'd appeciate any insight into the the following questions: - can the seal be replaced with the gearbox in place? - if so, w/o a lift using only jack stands? - how do you stop the mainshaft from turning to remove the nut? - what other perils will I encounter? - is this job better left to a shop? I know there are multiple "noses" taking different seals so I'm assuming once I get in there I can figure out which seal to use. Any experience you can share is much appreciated. Brian Denis |

| Brian Assuming you have the MGB type drive flange, you can use a length of angle iron with a couple of holes drilled in it and bolt it to the flange. I use this for gearbox and differential flanges. ![]() |
