MG MGA - Gearbox plate

Or the engine back plate...living and learning!

I have to fit another back plate. Ouch. Seems the replacement motor had a 'high mount' starter back plate and I need to use the 'low mount' starter back plate from the old motor I removed. I am in the process of switching them out and I noticed my mechanic added some sealant to the gasket, which I saw upon removal of the back plate on the replacement motor. Should I be adding a sealant of a similar type to the assembly of the rear plate gasket when I refit this?

Hey Stephen,
Im assuming you are putting a 1500 in your A? You can use some gasket sealer there if you want it wont do anyharm. Its not manditory as you should have a conversion gasket between the engine and the plate.

Goodluck.

Hello Steven,

Yes, I am putting an original 15GB engine for the mechanical tach drive. And I wanted to restore the integrity of the car...but definitely disliked the electric tach set up. So, I see that there is a paper gasket provided in the assembly and that my mechanic had added some sealer/filler. My old engine, from which I took the back plate, had the gasket and no filler. I would wish to eliminate leaks, but alas, I am not sure I will. But I can at least mitigate them. Love the cars!

Thanks for your input. Wondering if all the home shop builders or professionals recommend it...

Its always good to get more than one opinion. Barney site and the archive on the bbs is always good for getting answers. Or just post, these guys will take care of you.

You only need a little gasket sealer on the engine side around the camshaft rear bearing area.

Personally, I have always liked insurance.....
Technically, as Chris said, it isn't necessary to use a full coat of gasket sealer....BUT...How often do you pull your engine for service?....
When I remove a back plate, I always use sealer on both surfaces...You don't have to gob it on, just a smear will do....You're not going to reuse the gasket, if you tear it down again, are you?
Most sealers are easy to remove with a gasket scraper, and a little care. Well, that's just my 2 cents.
