MG MGA - gearbox assembly
I now have the mainshaft re-assembled with a couple of new thrust washers. I notice that the 2nd gear sunchronizer hub has about 1/8" of free movement. I can't see any bits missing. Is this normal? |

Art - Yes, it is this movement that actuates the synchro mechanism. The fork moves the outer sleeve, by way of the three springs & balls; The hub contacts the baulk ring, which blocks the outer sleeve from moving further until it is synchronized - we hope! FRM |

Fletcher, it is the inner sleeve which has the 1/8". Still OK? |
Art Pearse |
Art - Yes. Study the action. And you will see that 3/4 has the same once you get that far. I see I left out a phrase: "The fork moves the outer sleeve, >> then the outer moves the hub, << by way of the three springs & balls,... FRM |

Make sure that end floats and so on are within factory specs or you will be disappointed with gear changes, etc. I restored my 1600 coupe back when (genuine) new spacers etc still available but the "thickest" available would not restore factory specs so I had some made. Quite simple to do and well worth the trouble (make sure that they are made out of, is it, phosphor-bronze?). Far better than my 1600 roadster gearbox which was professionally rebuilt prior to my ownership. |

Barry, done that! After a lot of confusion on my part about the clearances, clarified by FRM, I obtained one new centre thrust washer and a +4 thou front thrust washer, all is fine. I also managed to get the OEM rollers for the layshaft. |
