MG MGA - Gear box question
Is a slight clash of gears normal when shifting from 1st to 2nd? It is most apparent when the car is driven away from a cold start. As the gearbox warms up, the clash disappears. Only the shift from 1st to 2nd is affected. Could it be a worn syncro? This is a 58 A with 1500 motor and matching gearbox. Anything to worry about? |

FV, It is normal to have a worn synchro on 2nd. gear. After market synchro rings made from more durable material are available here in Aus. so I expect also available in USA. When changing from 1st. to 2nd., just delay engaging the gear a little then it will slip in -- at least for a few more miles! Barry |

You can get a steel synchro ring for 2nd gear in the USA, but it has different cone dimensions, so the 2nd gear must be replaced along with it (add cost of a new gear). If there was a more durable 2nd gear synchro ring that mates with the original gear I would certainly like to hear about it. |
