MG MGA - Fuel pump

The old lady started spluttering a few days ago and is still doing so ... but not all the time. I adjusted the points and checked the timing, which is all OK, so have concluded that it's a fuel problem. I removed the fuel pump this morning, to clean out the filter, and couldn't believe how much muck and dirt had built up over the years. It's the original pump which probably hasn't been cleaned for the past 58 years, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. So my question is ... if you were me, would you just clean it out and refit the original, or would you take the opportunity to fit a replacement? I've also been reading a number of old threads about 50 year old fuel tanks and my guess is that mine is full of rust flakes and other rubbish, so ism it time to replace that too?

No don't fit a replacement. These are perfectly adequate pumps. I would strip it all down and clean everything, check the rubber diaphragm in case the rubber is past it. Polish the points or maybe treat yourself to a new set including VDR and put it back. Set it according to the manual and it will probably last another 50 years. All parts available from SU/Burlen.......................Mike
