MG MGA - Front Shock Absorber top-up hole

Decided it was time to check fluid level in front shock absorbers. Everywhere I see instructions for refill hole on top of the units, both of mine appear to be at the back of the units facing into engine bay. I assume replacement units have been fitted at some time - instead of the squarish top plate with the filler hole, mine are circular with no filler hole. Can anyone identify these units, also I assume I have to fill until fluid starts to trickle out? Any guidance available please....

Those are the originals, and yes that is how you fill them.
It would have made more sense to put the filler holes for the rear shocks on the side as well

Original MGA shocks front and rear have the fill plug on top. Most current (new) replacement front shocks have the later style round turret on top with fill plug on side of the turret. These may or may not fit under the inner fender, often requiring some cutting of the inner fender for top clearance. Otherwise to have to double but and remove the studs to slide the shock out sideways.

There MUST be a small air space left in top of reservoir to allow for thermal expansion of the fluid. Original shocks have a short downward collar under the fill hole that makes fill fluid run over the top while there is still a little air trapped in the reservoir. Just fill until it spills over and install the plug.

Thanks for the guidance, looks like my shocks have been replaced then at some point as they definitely have the round turret and barely fit under the inner wing despite slight cut backs on both. Job done so many thanks.
