MG MGA - Facet fuel pumps

I know that everyone raves on about how good the Facet pumps are v. SU's, but just thought I'd let you know that the MG Magnette of Jose de Sousa in the Peking to Paris Rally (www.pekingparis.com)has had both of his pumps fail...I hope he had an SU in reserve?

This just proves what I have been saying for many years. All electric or electronic fuel pumps are electromechanical devices that can fail at any time for any reason. I too, have had the Facet pumps fail on vehicles I have owned. Even though they employ a piston rather than a diaphragm like the SU pumps, they operate in the same way and will eventually wear out, leaving the driver stranded just as the SU pumps do. This is also why I advocate a permanently installed backup pump - see the article, Backup Fuel Pump in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ It is unusual though to have two different pump fail at the same time. Dave,
Very good advice. I lost my SU fuel pump about a month ago and am now running on my installed spare Facet. It sure was nice just to flip a switch and back on the road. I have this system now installed on all my cars. Any idea how long the Facet should last under normal conditions? Have a good day!

Any of the electric fuel pump should last on the order of 100,000 miles plus or minus. This even includes a points style SU pump if it is run regularly and not abused (as in allowing the inlet side to become clogged, causing the pump to overheat. Cheers - Dave
