MG MGA - Engine mounts

My motor sits at a height where, if I had a starter handle, it would just slip in over the steering rack and would be touching same. I do not propose to use a handle. Is this OK?

My engine used to sit low on its engine mounts whereby the starter handle hit the pulley wheel above the starter dog hole. The problem I had was that the pulley wheel on my 1800 was so close to the cross member that I could not get the fan belt on or off the pulley.

When I had the engine out at the end of last year I noticed that the mounting brackets on the engine had bent slightly over the years. I straightened them and fitted new mounting blocks. The starter hole now lines up.

Art, hope you solved your engine height problem. When I first bought the car the engine was tilting about 15 degrees to the right, looking at the engine from the front. The starting handle would not go through to the dog hole no matter how hard I tried. I discovered that some PO had fitted a right hand mount on the left side. He bent the mount in such away to make the bolt holes to match the studs on the mount, but ended up with a botch job. I replaced the mount with the proper one and now I can use the handle to adjust timing, valve lash and start the engine if ever my battery fails. Very handy indeed. Art, while I remember, in one of your threads which you posted sometime in April, you said that you managed to buy the OEM needle roller bearings for the g/box layshaft. Can you please let me know the source where you got them. Many tks.

Frank, I got the OEM needle rollers from John Esposito of Quantumechanics, after a long search. But they were the last 3 sets he had, he said.
I did salvage my old ones, and the front two I think are as good as new, judging by the layshaft wear which was nil in that area. The rear one was a different story. I did segregate them, so if you are interested in the front ones, they are yours for the postage. This is for the standard layshaft, 0.645" dia. I believe you like me only had wear on the rear brg, so maybe you can make 3 good ones this way.

Art, yes thanks I'll be very interested to have the bearings. Here is my email address, please drop me a line with the postage costs. Also let me know how you want me to pay you. I can pay you via Paypal if you have an account. You decide.

Many thanks
