MG MGA - Do you think these carbs would fit on an MGA?

I saw this on eBay and thought it was interesting. Do you think they would work?

Yes, they are interesting. Yes, they will bolt onto a standard MGA. No, don't be tempted. They won't bolt onto your cylinder head. You've got a nicely spec'ed motor already, especially if it has got 1 3/4" SU's on it. You didn't mention the carbs in your other post. Have you checked what size they are?

See the "Fitting a Webber carb" carb tread on the MGB General Board for a discussion and my thoughts on sidedraft Webers.

Derek Nicholson

Haven't checked the carb size on mine yet. But I figured that if they're this cheap it'd be cheaper and better than getting mine worked on.

Wouldn't getting it fitted just be a matter of finding the right inlet manifold?

I apologize if this is a stupid question.

Worthwhile for replacing the single stromberg on a 79 MGB, but would provide little if any improvement over a well set up pair of SU's on an MGA.
Jeff Schultz

SU's are easy to rebuild, and parts are available and cheap. Unless the throttle shafts need to be reamed and bushed, it is just a matter of disassembly, cleaning and replacing jets and seals. Getting the weber tuned to your engine would be a lot of work.
Jeff Schultz

Looking at that thread Derek mentioned it seems that a lot of people believe Webers are overrated. Why do they have such a great reputation then.

(I'm new to all this. Every car I've ever owned before has had fuel injection.)

Darian -
Please don't even think of this for your new MGA.

I have found that the twin choke Weber is better than the SU on race car. But this is only if you use two twin choke Webers on a cylinder head with the same number of inlet ports (2 twin choke Webers on a mga twin cam which has four inlet ports and 3 twin choke Webers on Triumph or Jaguar engines which have six inlet ports).
You cannot buy twin choke SU's (extremely rare).
Two twin choke Webers would be OK on your four inlet port HRG cylinder head, but not one weber with a siamesed inlet manifold such as the one on Ebay. The single twin choke Weber on a two inlet port MGA cylinder head is no better the two SU's.
As I said this is for racing. Around town I would have the SU's always.

To answer your question Darian, yes this arangement should bolt straight up to your head. There is a clearence issue with fitting a weber to an MGA and if the manifold is too long the carb fouls the inner wing. This manifold looks short enough to not become a problem although the ram pipes may need to be sorted.
I have run a weber on my MGA since a week or 2 after I finished rebulding it. That was out of frustration with the SUs. It in that time has performed faultlessly and never requires attention, it is fit it, set it up and forget.
That said I have used Webers on A and B series engines all my life so I have a small amount of ability with them.

There are many urban myths with webers as is the case with everything some people just repeat rubbish to attempt to sound knowledgable, that is unfortunately the case with the poor old weber carb.

The weber is NOT heavy on fuel, it is a fuel metering device and if it was heavy on fuel then the engine would be running rich, not rocket science is it! But search the achives and see how many make the comment that it gulps fuel.

The only downside to a weber is its induction roar. It is noisy at high RPM so be warned.
Bob (robert) yes I own an MG Dwarf!
