MG MGA - Distributor options

I'm making the effort to use my car far more than I used to rather than leaving it in the garage, so its now in use every day.

I'm running a 5 bearing 1800 engine and although the car is running well it really needs a new distributor.

I've looked at the archives but would really like some up to date information on the best options.

I realise I could have one of my existing distributors rebuilt but the results dont always appear to be quite right.

Has anyone tried the modern (Lucas copy) replacments which appear to be very good value?

And has anyone tried the electronic type which have up to 16 built in advance curve setting so that the most suitable can be selected? But very expensive!

I have used a Lucas 45D copy, part no. 12H5038, on my 3 bearing MGB for the last three years, and am very pleased with it. You donīt realise what a worn distributor does to your engine until you replace it. It felt like I suddenly had a six cylinder engine!

Personally, I prefer the easy to repair simplicity of a conventional distributor. It will never leave you completely stranded.

Since the exchange rate is SO good for you right now, I'd consider an overseas call to Cecilia at Scarborough Faire for one of my rebuilt distributors. She purchased 15 a few weeks ago, so she has a very good inventory. If you want an original date-matched one, she probably has it. If you want a "performance" version with a slightly modified ignition curve, there were 4 of those as well - and CHEAP!!!

*Note that I have NO affiliation with them other than rebuilding their distributors for inventory, I just appreciate their exceptionally knowledgeable customer service!!!*

I've gotten into servicing a LOT of the new 45D distributors for folks who aren't happy with the performance. I've found misground points cams, completely WRONG advance curves, and varying amounts of advance, as well as almost NEVER having them come with an appropriate vacuum advance for the application. I recommend folks steer clear of the new replacements until they improve quality!
