MG MGA - Disc-brake squeal fix?

I was reading through the MG Experience Forum today and spotted a post about brake squeal.

Apparently, like me, they had gone through all the usual cures for this problem, including a smear of very high melting point grease on the back of the pad and fitting thin anti-squeal shims behind the pad.

They found that if the brake pistons in the calliper were re-orientated so that the flat cut-out was vertical, facing the hub instead of the normal horizontal position of facing downwards, then the brake squeal disappeared.

This apparently is how the similar pistons in the MGBs brakes are installed.

Has anyone else on here tried this and can anyone see any problems if the pistons are rotated in this way?

It was a set of Moss supplied calipers that caused me major issues, both squealing and residual pressure after brake release. At one point I could release the brakes while stationary on a shallow incline and the car did not move. I sometimes wondered if the overheating and 'pad polishing' caused by the dragging caused the subsequent squealing. All was sorted when I then bought a set of MGOC calipers.

I took the Moss calipers apart and discovered they had both been incorrectly assembled. The oil seal retainer rings on both calipers had been forced in, bending the metal ring. This resulted in pressure to one side of the pistons, causing rubbing on the cylinder walls and stiction.
