MG MGA - Crankshaft rear Oil Seal

I'm sure this is an old question, but............ Is there a conversion kit which replaces the rope seal and scroll on the 3 bearing 1600 engine?. Does anyone have any direct experience of fitting and using it? Is there anyone who has a 1600 3 bearing crank with a re-grind left in it. Sadly, I think mine has done its journey

There is a mod which I think is to be found on the MGAMGB.com site (which appears to be offline right now.) It involves machining the rear plate to accept a B type real oil seal, and I think also some mod to the crank machining

Check out Barney Gaylord's site;

Dominic - If you are thinking of Doug Jackson's site, it is up and doing fine at http://www.mgbmga.com/ The URL is a bit counter intuative, expecially if one has a MGA. There is a problem with the site, in that the menue on the left side of the screen doesn't show up. However by scrolling down in that area, the pointer changes to a hand and by clicking at the point where it does, the link will come up, although it is guess work to find what you are looking for. Hi Geoff
I assume you are talking about a 1600 OHV not twin cam engine. If so I have made a aluminium back plate for mine and had it machined to accept an oil seal (made especially to fit), the crank is impossible to modify without ruining a good crank (unless somebody knows different), so I had a sleeve made to fit over the crank, which involved machining a flywheel to fit over the sleeve. All was assembled with RTV sealant, the result? it still leaks oil!! One day when I'm in the mood I will pull it apart and try again. My poor old coupe has to take a backseat at the moment, while I restore my Twin Cam. I have a new 1600 crank (boxed), but I don't know if I want to sell it

OK - I've read through the Barney Gaylord site and it all looks sensible. Is there anyone who's actually done this? Does it work? Are there any downsides. This is the original (correct numbers) engine for the car and I would hate to destroy it

I am in the process of putting a 3 main 1800 in my car and would also like to hear from anyone who has done the oil seal conversion.
