MG MGA - crankshaft for 1622cc??

I have new crankshaft with numbers B438AX and 12H429. Is this for a 1622cc engine or what? Need one? Value?
steve

Steve, I don't have a 1622 parts book. Just a 1500, and it shows the crank for a 1500 as 1H753, so it isn't for that. Maybe one of the 1622 guys could look it up for you? Moss shows them as N/A for the 1622, my Vicky Brit catalogue for fall 2004 shows the 1622 crank priced at $401.95 sell price, list price is $502.44.
Did you get those numbers off the crank? If they are stamped/etched or whatever into it, it is probably an MG original. I don't know if that makes it worth more or less.
good luck,

My 1600 Mk-II parts book shows the crank as part 12H428, no idea why yours is off by one.

I'm certainly no expert but if you search the web under the 12H429 number this is what you get:

I don't know why the book shows a different number.

Chuck,
An interesting site. I checked the antique/obsolete parts site, and they have a crankshaft for an MG "sidewinder". Curiosity reigns. Does anybody know what this is?

Going through my mga twin cam Service Parts List I find that part numbers of many items are slightly different from the number on the castings and forgings. From this I have assumed the the number actually on the item is only for the cast or forged item itself and the part number is for the finished, machined item.
Castings can be machined in different ways. The Twin Cam inlet and exhaust camshafts are identical when cast, but when the timing slots are machined in different places for an inlet or exhaust camshaft they have different part numbers.

Mike,

My guess would be that the "sidewinder" would be the 1100 sedan.

Just a guess though.

I think that Mick is correct. It would only make sense that the cast part would be different from the machined part. I seem to recall a similar arrangement I ran across a while back. Just can't recall enough of it though.

"standardcrankshaft.com", eh? God! Everything is out there, isn't it?

Mick and Chuck,
I think that you are correct regarding part numbers. I know that in the electronics world, you will frequently find board part numbers painted on, with another part number relating to the actual part. I found this out through experience repairing a friends television set. Do you know that an incorrect part, even the correct part number, but from a different year television can cause a "Quasar" in the back of a television?
