MG MGA - Coast to Coast record
OK, maybe not a record, but I thought you guys might like this story. I just sold my '58 1500, unrestored, largely original car. The buyer was from Oregon and I am in Richmond, VA. He flys out on Friday night, I pick him up, load up the car and off he goes that night. The good sign was that he had a carry-on bag for his belongings and a checked through bag w/ tools. He also has a '46 TC so he knows Brit cars. Well, here are the stats for his solo drive across country: Buyer writes: "I believe that I now hold the record for the 1958 MGA solo Richmond-Corvallis run. I arrived here late Monday night. Here are the stats: Distance: 2944 miles Time (including breaks): 77 hours Gas: 113.5 gallons Oil: 10 quarts Top speed: 62 mph Average speed (not including breaks): 55 mph (probably) Number of 80-mph truckers who would rather have seen an MGA in a trash compactor: 12,791 Everyone who hears about this trip thinks I'm nuts, but after 3000 miles on the road, I know the car pretty well ... and I feel like it's mine." I about fell out of the chair. The only real problem was the leaking rear main seal (surprise, surprise). |

Jake, Wonderful story. You certainly took good care of your baby and sold her ready for a transcontinental run. On top of that the buyer got two complete oil changes while watching the counrtyside roll by. Sounds like a win-win deal. Jim Haskins 1953 MG TD |

Jake, You have to get this guy to join our BBS, he has already established that he is more than committed enough to fit right in. Or should that be "more than crazy enough to be committed"<G>. Either way, he sounds like my kind of MG people. Frank |

Frank, comitted is what I was thinking when he told me he was flying out from OR to drive it back, sight unseen. I had been totally forthcoming with all the quirks, problems, etc so I guess he felt like he knew what he was getting into. To give you an idea of this guy, he sold an AH 3000 when his daughter was born in 1970 and decided that a 911 would be a good family car for three people. He finally got a VW when the maintenance got to be too much. I smile every time I think about it. I was kind of sad to see her go, but she is certainly in good hands. JH |
