MG MGA - Clip Ends for Seat Belts

I am moving up from lap belts to 3 point belts in a '59 roadster. I got my 3 point belts but all ends are solid, not the detachable clip ends. I know I will have to be able to detach the shoulder strap from the mounting eye-bolt so I need a clip end. Anyone know of a good source for these?
Thanks!

Steven,

I purchased the 3-point belts from Moss last year (222-209). These have the clip ends. Pay attention to the leagth of the belts, they come in long and short versions. I went with the short (which is the male end, on the inboard side) and find that the belt is difficut to snug up tight because it is so short.

I have two factors that also are effecting the reach of the belt. First, my seats are mounted a couple of inches forward of the normal position, and second I am mounting the eye-bolts through the floor way back in the corner to catch as much overlapping metal as possible. Moving the seat back and/or mounting the anchor points on the transmission tunnel (factory style) would probably fix my problem.

Hi John -
I didn't get the Moss 3 point belts because they don't have the vintage buckles. (I might have some long 2-point belts for sale here, soon.)
I am looking for after market clip on or snap on ends. I want to cut the solid ones off and replace them with the detachable ends.

Steve, Who supplied your 3 point belts with the vintage buckles? Mike

I had a chat with Quickfit SBS at the NEC Classic Motor Show late last year and here is the reply I received about their quick release system together with a couple of pictures.

Sir,

Thank you very much for your enquiry.

I am sorry for not being in touch for so long but we are very busy with enquiries after the NEC exhibition. Please find attached picture of seat belts quick release system for MGA/MGB convertible models. It costs £11.5 + VAT each. Chrome key hole type anchor plate is £8.50 + VAT each.

Best regards

Their website looks like a bit of a WIP:

M.J. - JC Whitney has them (#176094 made by Beam's) but I see the Moss has the vintage buckles too, Moss #222-209 as noted by John. The Moss has a different shoulder mount and tightening device but buckles are the same. That number didn' show up in my MGA catalogue, interesting.
I like the spring loaded snap like the Moss unit, I'd be a little leery of the keyhole design of Quickfits (but I am not an engineer, either!)

I have the 222-209 belts, and like John I wish I had bought the longer belts.(222-206?)http://www.mossmotors.com/graphics/products/PDF/222-206_-209.pdf

I keep my seat all the way back and it is still a little hard to buckle and adjust because it is so short. I welded a gusset in the bottom corner of the steel framework to mount the inner eye bolts. I drilled a hole through the rear spring bracket to mount the outer eye bolts. It is basically installed like Barney shows on this page except using the eye bolts. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/interior/int121.htm

Steve B,

Clarke Spares sells a reproduction of the original-style quick release anchor hardware, but not the belts, for the 3-point belts that were fitted to the late model MGA. This hardware is used with the "solid" type belts you presently have, but may require welding if you don't have all three of the factory mount points for each belt. See the attached photo, which someone had posted along with a description of the correct procedure for folding the MGA rag top. The URL for Clarke Spares is: http://www.clarkespares.com/carparts.html

I bought a set of the C-S quick release attachments for my 1600 MkII, which has the factory anchor/mounting points, and I'm pleased with them. I'm using a set of the Moss belts with "solid" ends.

Guys,
I'm don't understand why the shoulder belt has to be unclipped from the mount. Doesn't it clip into the lap belt?
I installed Todd Clarke 3-point mounts in my coupe but don't yet have belts. I know the coupe belt mounts differently but is this un-clip feature required?

Thanks,
Gerry

On the 3-point belts, the shoulder belt runs from over the shoulder to a mount near the floor. With a roadster, this would interfere with raising the top so it has to unclip. You wouldn't have that problem with a coupe.

Jeff,
Thanks. Makes sense. My roadster only has lap belts at the moment. Guess I'll be needing these clips if (when) I go to 3-point belts.

I wish I knew Moss had the 3 points with vintage buckles and clip ends. Anyway, if you want to convert to clip ends, get extensions, etc. here is one source: http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/seatbelts.html
