MG MGA - Choke cable movement

Fellows, how far does your choke pull out from the dash. When I built the Twink, I could pull it out well over an inch and this was needed to start the engine. With the fabulous 1500 Coupe (that another great restorer built)it only pulls out about 1/2 inch. Haven't tried to start it in really cold weather.

My choke cable is the original ratchet type, and comes out 3 stops on the ratchet mechanism. First stop (about 3/8") is fast idle only. Second and third stops (about 3/4", and a bit over 1") drop the jets successively. It could be in your case that the cable is clamped such that the choke levers are pre-loaded (giving less range of movement when the cable's pulled out), but then you'd probably be running fairly rich at idle. The choke mechanism has a number of components that can develop slop and keep the choke from behaving properly. Barney Gaylord's site has a nice section on choke adjustment: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/cb102.htm

Thanks Mark, the cable probably is pre loaded because there is a bit of black soot in the tailpipe showing a rich mixture. Otherwise the engine seems to be running fine so I think I'll just leave it alone.
