MG MGA - CAR SOS MGA

The Car SOS guys are restoring a 59 MGA roadster on NAT GEO Thursday 8th March at 8pm.
AR Terry

Thanks - I've put it on record but rather hoping I will have a knock on my door with a TV crew and a surprise!

Graham

Have you had a look to see if your car is still there?

My OH keeps threatening to phone them and see if they will finish my car.

Dave

Wheeler Dealers will be featuring an MGA this Thursday at 9pm on Quest.

Can any of you UK guys record these programs and make a link to something like Youtube so us in the Antipodes can watch??? It is often years before we can watch these on free to air TV.
Gary Lock

Try a search for Wheeler Dealers MGA on Youtube. A few copies exist here already.

BTW, dam good show.

I recall seeing this very episode a couple of years ago.

It was a shame that it spent so much of the programme time on the oil seal mod whilst in one second Ed was cutting off the lower front wing, only to be followed a few seconds later by the appearance of a completed re-spray.

Just managed to watch Car SOS on utube. Worth a watch for all those entering on a basket case rebuild. Good to see another UK origin A back on the road and the registration from my home town of Plymouth.

was this carSOS or wheeler dealers AFAIK they are two different beasts

Dominic Clancy

Hi Brian I noticed the Plymouth reg too being my home town as well, I did know a blue MGA back in the early 70's in Plymouth but it would too much of a stretch for it to be the same one :)

This was the brand new SOS release, only shown for the first time in UK a couple of days ago I believe. Colin, you must have seen another show.
Gary Lock

Agree the SOS programme was better than the Wheeler Dealers. We all know what's involved in restoring these cars and it certainly isn't as easy and magical as WD presented, although I am gratified that Mike Brewer got 35K$ for what may have been a cosmetic rebuild other than the brakes and engine. Fast forward a month or two.... If they made 6K$ profit they spent 14K$ on bits, so god only knows what the SOS guys spent on the basket case glacier blue car. My heart goes out to the guy who got his car restored; to loose his son and daughter in law on their honeymoon is heart breaking. How do you get over that, hopefully none of us will never know....

Nice comments about the MGA though and it does appear to be an appreciating classic which while most of us don't give a **** is nice to hear.

I wonder if we, separately, saw two different programmes?

I watched "Wheeler Dealers" on UK Freeview Ch 37 and have definitely seen this before - I recall chuckling that MB didn't even know that this White roadster was in fact a 1600. Remember Ed quit this programme early in 2017 and this episode was 'in the can' long before that.

AR Terry mentions a Glacier Blue car and "SOS Guys". Car SOS is on UK Ch 5 with Fuzz and Tim and the format is different; they sneak the car away to surprise the owner with a finished restoration.

Hi
The WD mga was a white LHD roadster restored in the US and has been televised twice on Quest Ch37. The iris blue A was shown on Nat Geo channel on 8 March, but since found on uTube. This A was restored by car SOS team and like others have said took lots of £££ to complete.
Mike Brewer is doing another A and is being reported in the MGCC Safety Fast.
Enjoy and drive. When the weather permits

I've noticed with a lot of the SOS 'restorations', the engine bay often ends up painted black.

BTW, Car SOS is on UK Channel4, although some time after it airs on Nat Geo, I believe, so I haven't seen the MGA episode yet.

Hi
Has that rear engine oil seal mod been discussed on this forum and does anyone know of a UK company that has undertaken such a conversion.
Many thanks

Mark
M Dollimore

The rubber rear seal mod you saw on Wheeler Dealers came from here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/cs202a.htm
Mike had the printed web pages in his hand as he was entering the machine shop.

Hi Mark,

I think Peter Gamble at High-Gear Engineering offers this modification or something similar.
John Bray

Thanks, Barney and John I'll contact Peter, the 5 speed conversion from PG is still in the boxes stored away somewhere.

@ M. Dollimore :

if the 5-speed conversion is still "in the boxes" I assume you are not going to use it !!

Do you want to sell it ??
