MG MGA - Car Mileage?
There have been a number of interesting threads regarding general information (SN's etc.) about our cars. I don't recall seeing one about how much mileage is on the cars. Any of you folks out there with big mileage? Some marks actually give mileage award badges. I estimate my 58 coupe has done over 250,000 miles. When I bought her in 71 the odometer had already rolled and was broken at about 32,000 (132,000). In the next 10 years (71-81), as my daily driver, I'm sure I logged another 140,000 to 150,000, but I never had the odometer fixed so its just an estimate. Hopefully, I soon be logging miles again on my newly restored odometer! Cheers, Gerry

It might be interesting to also here of any cars with exceptionally low milage (assuming your odometer works and has never been reset or turned backwards). My 56 roadster has about 74000 miles, which isn't either extrordinarily high or low.

The problem is this information cannot be fully trusted unless we are talking about a 1 or 2 owner car. The odometer on my '57 coupe read 81,000 when I bought the car 2 years ago, but the odometer was also disconnected at the time, so who knows! M.D. '57 Coupe

My odometer reads 59K miles but I have no way of knowing if that is correct. The car was fully restored 3K miles ago. On the high side, my '65 B has covered 311,000 miles. On the low side, my '53 YB has only 78,000 original miles.

If you drive around in reverse you can reduce your mileage to such an extent you will go back in time, you will probably be sat in a ox-cart

Do I add up the mileage of the cars that were cobbled together to make mine, average them, or just use the mileage of the one that donated the greatest number of parts?

R.L. You must use a weighted average. This will give the best idea, although, if you truly weight the average correctly, you must also consider the percentage of parts from each vehicle. I have 60 coupe with about 64000 miles, two 58s with rebuilt speedometers, zero miles, and a 57 roadster with rolled over mileage at 4.3, although it is doing about 95mph in my driveway. I don't trust that one. BTW, all are project cars, none on the road.

Problem with that formula is when you change the tires. Lowers your mileage greatly!

Depending on the state, the title/bill of sale "should" have somewhat accurate numbers. I remember seeing a frightening number of miles on my 1959 roadster when I bought it in New Jersey in 1999. If I recall correctly (and that happens less and less lately) it was around 400,000 miles! However, the body was in very good condition, so I took a chance. Since then, the transmission has been rebuilt, the differential blew up and was rebuilt, a new radiator has gone in, brake lines have been replaced, I've rewired the entire car, the engine is being rebuilt as we speak, and the interior has been completely redone. Other than those minor items, it was a bargain!!
