MG MGA - Caliper adaptor Plate Bolts

Hi

I am reassembing the front suspension and have a small problem. The caliper mounting plate bolts onto the knuckle with 4 x 3/8 UNF bolts. I ordered a set from B & G (BTB 198) and I got bolts that are 1 3/8 inch long. These bolts are too long and consequently the threaded section is too short. The plate and knuckle have a thickness of 5/8 inch so I think I need a bolt which is 1 1/8 inch long. Am I doing something wrong? Do I pack it out with washers? Do I order 1 1/8 inch bolts? The knuckles were originally from a drum brake car is this the problem? I thought the knucles were all the same except for different steering arm thicknesses.

There are two different length bolts for this application.
BTB198 -- bolt before dust cover, up to (c)102588.
HBZ0611 -- bolt with dust cover, from (c)102589 on.
The extra length (about 1/4-inch difference) is to accommodate the tube spacer and dust shield. If your car does not have the dust shields you need the earlier bolt which is shorter. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/brakes/bt125.htm

I don't have a disc brake car handy to inspect, so I don't have first hand knowledge of the required bolt length. If someone can measure the bolt on the car I would be delighted to record this information.

Hi

Thanks Barney, I will machine off the extra 1/4 inch and thread it a bit more rather than waiting for new ones to arrive.
