MG MGA - Butch White's tranny business

Did someone take over Butch White's 5-sp tranny business after he passed away? Is there a name/ phone #/ email/ web page?

thanks,
Tyler

I believe there was and I think I have his name somewhere. Hopfully someone will be able to provide it or I will have to look thru a bunch of stuff to find it. You might want to also contact Peter Gamble at Hi Gear. He is the person who makes them in England and should be able to tell you who sells them here in the states

thanks Jim,
Wow! The price has really gone up since I bought mine in 2002 for $1800 (included shipping). I was looking for a 5-sp for my MG TF, but they're now the same price as Moss.

Tyler, the value of the dollar vs. the English pound it now almost 2 to 1. In 2002 it was most likely about one pound equals $1.60. Our damm govermemt at work with its policys devalues the US dollar.

This ad is currently posted in the classified section of this site. Would it fit an A?

Dan Barton

Dan, you'd have to check with Rivergate, but most likely you'd have a different starter location and changes to the rear mount for a start.
Bill Young

If it's a MGB kit it should fit to a High starter MGA backplate.

Tyler,
WOW! If that was the price now($1800.00) I'd be inline with dollars in hand. $2695.00 plus shipping cost is just a little much in my opinion...
Mike

Mike,
I'm cringing at the thought of restoring my TF with the old tranny, but $3200 (for the TF conversion)is a big chunk. The 2 best improvements to my A were the cruise control and the 5-speed. Now, I can drive all day and cover a lot of miles, no sweat.

<WTF>
Cruise control on an A? Have you no shame?

Dan, the Rivergate kit is designed for the MGB 5 bearing engine, so unless you have that engine, you will have issues there. It uses a modified flywheel that is cut down to accept the 280 zx ring gear and the rear plates are quite different although it will bolt up. Next, the trans will not fit without modifications to the trans tunnel and removal of the stock trans mount ears from the frame. I have this conversion in My 77 MGB love it. I set the complete assembly in my MGA coupe frame to check fit and decided it was to many modifications to the car for my liking. I am currently researching the Toyota options. I have a Toyota Supra to Rover kit to install in my V8 conversion.

Del,
Don't knock it till you tried it. I have one that is very well hidden and can not be seen. It is great going down the coast HWY on the Pacfic Ocean and with the radio on. The only problem I have is getting the bugs off my teeth from the BIG grin I have while driving my car which I have had since 1971!!!
JEFF BECKER

Radio? You can hear the radio? Mine worked up until a few years ago, but I could never hear it with the car running, let alone at speed. As for the cruise control, I just don't know. I don't drive an MG to let a machine control the throttle for me.

Tyler

What cruise control did you use?

Thanks

Larry,
The Audiovox from Checker Auto Parts. It's still available for about $100. The unit is completely hidden under the dash on the passenger side. The only thing showing is a twin throttle cable coming out of the firewall, but I've seen an MGA installation where the CC cable was connected to the throttle bracket on the passenger-side footwall, so nothing showed. I have the little control panel (~1.5"x2")hidden under the dash on a cantilever extension rod (swing it out to use-swing it away to hide).

Has anyone had any recent business contact with Mr. Hall? A few months ago I needed to order a part for my previously-installed MGA conversion. I left at least two voicemail messages, but never got a return call.

You might try Jim Hall @ jimndeehall@comcast.net or Ph. 904-282-1658 or his cell 904-613-9591.
Jim is also a Moss dist.

Are there any PAVED roads in Alaska that are long enough to require cruise control. LOL. Gordon
Gordon Harrison

You laugh now, but my MG spent the last 25 years of its life in a town that has no outside road access, which may only be reached by boat or aircraft. Not counting the paved city streets, there are 13 miles of paved highway. The situation in Anchorage is not so bad since pretty much everything is paved and the "entire" Alaska road system is available. Of course, the 4 driving seasons here are almost winter, winter, still winter, and construction. 8^P
Del Rawlins

A bit off topic, Del, your description of your previous 25 year location sounds like you are talking about Kodiak. My son is stationed there in the CG. He has been there for 4-5 years. We have visited several times over the last few years.

I must say that that is a strange place for an MGA, among all the 4-wheelers and 4x-pickups. I don't recall any british stuff except for for Land Rovers, (my son's was on of the two).Even if you had an MGA with 5-speed, you would be hard pressed to ever get into 5th gear on pavement there.

I will be flying over Anchorage on Thursday around noon on my way back from China. I will wave. Let me know if you see me:>)

Cordova. At one point, we had 3 MGAs and a rubber bumper midget. Other than my '59, they are all still down there, with one of the As and the midget having been sold. The other A is still in storage until my brother can move back to Alaska. There were a couple of Bs around, one of which was a GT which I still kick myself for not having bought when I had the chance. Used to be a Healey 3000 and a Morris Minor hiding down there, too.
