MG MGA - Brake cylinder question
1958 1500 MGA I'm installing a new brake cylinder in a rear brake drum. The old cylinder was sort of "floating" in the slot in the back plate. The new cylinder is a tight squeeze and won't be moving without some filing of the tabs that hold it in. My question is, is the cylinder supposed to move freely up & back (makes sense that is should) before I file down the new cylinder's tabs. Any help is appreciated, thanks Brian Denis |

There is thin frame of steel around the slot on the brake shoes side of the brake backing plate which bows up in the middle of the long sides of the slot. This applies some pressure on the cylinder to keep it a reasonably firm fit but shouldn't prevent it moving backwards and forwards freely. Make sure that frame (spring or whatever it is called!) isn't mangled and interfering with the movement of the cylinder. |
