MG MGA - Anyone have a MKII speedometer they want to sell?

The original in the car died on the way back from GT-47 a 127,520 miles. i was able to find a NOS unit, but it died after only 570 miles. Probably because the original lube was rumored to be Whale grease!

Nossinger no longer rebuilds them, and the two alternatives are both unknown to me as well as asking ridiculous prices.

Do any of you have one that is in good in both working condition and cosmetically that you'd be willing to sell?

Jaeger 6161/12 is the model #

Thanks!

There's one on ebay right now @ $110:

eBay one seems to be stuck on 70MPH so maybe not a good option. Gary Locke normally has a good tip here.

Nick - I messaged the guy with the $110 unit on eBay. He doesn't know if it works - just says "the needle moves freely".

OK, same with the non-working one I currently own.

I asked him to hook a cable and drill up but he didn't respond.

Nossinger says they are getting in a shipment of "continuation series" speedos from Smith next week - $399 each plus shipping - sigh...

I was at GT-47 and won the speedometer that was in the silent auction. I did not end up using it, so I'd be happy to sell it. Unfortunately, the turns per mile is 1440 and not the 1376 as listed in your picture. It is number 6161 06. Also, the high beam light is blue and not red. The speedo was marked with an OK and I did use it for a very short while and it seemed to work fine.

HI Sherman - I may take you up on that offer - I'll email you directly to discuss more.

Hi Ken
sorry I couldn't help with the speedometer.

I had my speedo recalibrated a quite a few years ago in the UK to suit the 5-speed gearbox and it worked out really well.

I also had the high-beam indicator changed from red to blue, which is not original, but I found I could see it better in the dark. I always thought the ignition light had come on when I had the red high-beam light!

Say Hi to Melon for me.

Cheers

Hi Colyn,

Did the recalibrate add digits above 120? With your car, seems that would be wise!

For me, there are very few options out there for a unit that matches original.

I opted for hopefully the best, but the downside is that it's expensive - $400 for a NEW unit - directly from Smiths, via Nosing - they (Smiths) have revived the original tooling.

The next option was to spend $300 for a rebuild by a basically "unknown" source. The new unit seems like a better bet.

Melon says Hi - say Hi to Chris!
