MG MGA - Another LJ225 Variant Shelley Jack

I now have 64 Shelley jacks catalogued in the database. The latest find (the 65th) is a new variant of the LJ225, one type of which was supplied with later 1600s. It will be catalogued when the auction ends.

It is what I refer to as the 'droop snout LJ225'. It has a reinforcing gusset on top of the snout. A similar version, but with a 3-tier screw mechanism and cube jacking point, was supplied with the E-Type Jaguar.

A clever bit of swapping of parts could turn this £150 (asking price) jack into a £300 to £500 jack. I have never seen an original E-Type Jaguar jack for sale so I am guessing a bit at the price.

These droop snout LJ225s are frequently mis-sold as MGA jacks and command good prices. I am still trying to discover which cars used them. Interestingly, unlike other droop snout variants, this one is dated 61 (1961) which puts it in the MGA era! It also has a cranked handle which we thought was the preserve of the MGA variant LJ225, although the vendor seems unsure whether it is the original handle.

Another LJ225 variant has appeared on Ebay; this one has an interesting conversion bracket on top. A Healey vendor said it was for a Mk1 E-Type, but that does not tie in with E-Type concours advice I was given.

Anyone any clues?

Steve, The'droop snout' was the jack that came with my car many years ago.

But was it original? It does not fit under an MGA with a deflated tyre. There is always that 2 or 3 inches of screw always showing, whereas the 'correct' MGA version has the screw flush with winding mechanism.

Steve, this is my LJ225 (with droop snout) it measures about 13.5 cm high with no thread showing -is this a variant or general pattern?

I have a similar one in grey on the database. I note that the screw mechanism also fully retracts which is unusual for this variant. The only other one that does this is the 3-tier E-Type Jaguar jack that has a cube jacking point. Is yours 3 tier? If so, you could engineer a cube mounting point and convert your jack from one worth about 150 to one possibly worth between 300 and 500 on a good day.

I wish someone could give me a heads-up on which cars used these 'droop snout' jacks.

steve, mines only 2 tier and I sense the one in your picture may also be 2 tier.

Worth a double check. I thought my LJ31 was 2 tier for a couple of years, then I had a closer look and did a bit of twisting of the screws and found it was 3 tier.
