MG MGA - Advice on sourcing an MGA

I've been watching rather than posting on here for a while, so I hope this is in order. I am looking for an MGA - and wondering where best to go to find reliable advice on suppliers/restorers. I have not got the time or (face it) the skill to do a restoration myself.

I'm based in West Sussex (UK) and there are one or two at dealers in Sussex or elsewhere in the UK. I've also found a restoration garage (in Yorkshire) with a Series 2 in bits that they have offered to build for me - unfortunately the garage is is not in the MGOC recommended supplier list.

I want the car to be reliable and up to the odd trackday at Goodwood (where my race prepared Caterham 7 is just too noisy!) so I am thinking that something with at least front disc brakes and possibly the sierra gearbox conversion would be the thing.

I'm also planning on going to the local MGOC meeting in Chichester tomorrow to find some local advice. Any thoughts and pointers welcome.

I would thoroughly recommend Bob West in Pontefract, Yorkshire. He supplies every part for MGAs and does excellent rebuilds - to concours standard if you have the budget. His speciality is the Twin Cam but, as far as I am concerned, he is Mr MGA for all variants. Give him a ring on 01977 703828 (closed Sundays and Mondays).

All the best

I have just re-read your thread. Just in case the Yorkshire garage you refer to is Bob West's, let me put your mind at rest. Have a look at the following MG Owner's Club URL: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgoc&p=emg/001101.htm

Thanks - I remember seeing that MGA Le Mans car at Goodwood! I'll give Bob a call tomorrow for a chat - although the garage I had found was http://www.webart.co.uk/clients/meadowfieldsgarage/

Bob West is excellent - I bought my rally MGA 1600 Mk I from him some years ago. It’s a long drive to West Yorkshire though - I’ve done three return trips in winter in my MGA!

It, and my B GTV8 and RV8 are all maintained by The MG Barn:-

Their website doesn’t list any MGA’s in stock, but as you are so close it would be worth ringing Martin Cawte the MD who is very knowledgeable and often knows of nice cars for sale.

I should have added - if you want to call me to discuss Bob West or the MG Barn please e-mail me for my number.
