MG MGA - 1800 3-Bearing Engine

An 1800, 3-bearing on UK Ebay at the moment. They don't come up too often, but are a good option for those wanting to retain the mechanical tach drive when converting to an 1800.

Actually, taking a closer look, I am not totally convinced it's an 1800. It has what appears to be an MGA rear plate and MGA front plate, although these are interchangeable. It also has the MGA engine mounts. Does the 3-bearing 1800 engine have the additional forward location holes for an alternator?

It's a hybrid. Low starter position is 1500 type, prior to Jan '59. Two-pin flywheel is MGA. One piece early Tecalemit oil filter cannister is early 1500 type. Looks like a long nose water pump pulley. Head is pre-68, no air injection. Oil filler cap is MGB rubber type. Valve cover is MGA type (straight vent pipe). Tach drive makes the block a 3-main '64 or earlier. Back end of the block has the high mount holes for the tall MGB rear plate, so it looks like a 3-main MGB block. Front plate and engine mounts are same for MGA and MGB through early 1974. Generator mount is same through 1968. MGA crankshaft pulley.

My guess is MGB 3 main bearing block assembled with some early MGA 1500 external parts. No telling what cylinder head it has without asking, but it may not be the MGB head. The 15 head used on 1500/1600 engines is not as good as later types.
