MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MG ZT Difficulty selecting gears.

I am having problems selecting gears on my 2004 MG ZT CDTI+135.
when stationary without the engine running no problem,
put into first gear and depress the clutch pedal, start the engine, no problem.
Start the engine depress clutch pedal and try to select a gear BIG PROBLEM although it will select a gear if I force it, not good.
I should mention that when driving everthing is ok until I stop and try to select a gear from standstill.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening.
All comments and advice greatly appreciated.
