MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wotswrong with my rear brakes
The PO had my 1500 midget rear brakes re-furbished prior to selling to me. Recently the car started to pull to the side under braking. Sure enough....a siezed rear wheel cylinder. It was caused by the brake piston rubber cover contacting the drum and eventually wearing through and distributing rubber dust everywhere. 'Ah' thought I, the numpty who did the refurbishment must have fitted the wrong rubbers. I fitted new cylinders with new rubbers and same story. This morning I took the drum off and the rubber had worn through again. I can't see any way to adjust the wheel cylinder's position on the back plate. It's all done with a locating peg and hole in the backplate. Any thoughts anyone? Allan ![]()

Hi Anthony, Not sure what you mean by s/cyl Just had a look at the other side and the rubber is touching the drum but not as bad as the passenger side. Just scuff marks on the rubber. I fitted complete new cylinders from a reputable supplier so they should be the correct part. Allan

Allan, mine are an atrocious fit too, I suspect this is due to slight differences in the rubbers rather than the cylinders. The old ones I took off were a different shape and less thick. mine arent as badly worn away, I just think I was lucky

This can be caused by a bent backplate. If it is buckled in the area where the cylinder fastens through then the cylinder itself may be positioned askew. Inevitably someone will mention fastening the cylinders with small set screws, so it may as well be me! But that same problem was one of the reasons I did that modification on mine.
