MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Water leak 1275

I've been chasing an irritating water leak on my 1275. It appeared to be coming from the bottom edge of the water pump. Removed pump to replace gasket and noticed there was an extra hole in the engine front plate. It's about 2/3mm dia and sits right on the gasket line about 2cm to the right of the bottom left bolt of the water pump. What is it for? Because it seems to be the source of the leak. I tried blocking it with gasket seal, left it to set then replaced pump with new gasket and sealant for good measure but it's still leaking!! Any suggestions what it's for and a solution?
Many thanks

Just looked at archives. Could the pump seal have gone? I believe an indication of this is the pump weeping? I certainly am....

There is not alot of history that I can recall that the water pump gaskets go bad

The general.rule ive learned if there is a leak at the pump, it means its time to replace the pump

Try wiping dry and dusting the area with talcom baby powder...and search for the leak agian

If you have new hoses, less then 200 miles, give the clamps a retighten....nee hoses are natorious for leaking at the clamps with in the 1st couple hundred miles

With Prop on this.
If there's a leak from the water pump area, then I'd replace the pump and they yes they do leak from the gland seal.

The day I bought my first midget, the water pump leaked and the head gasket failed.

My introduction to MG motoring!

Yes, the seal can fail. There is/was a small hole on the underside of the pump. That was where the water leaked out.

Thanks guys. I've ordered a new pump and gasket because I've double checked the hoses etc. I'll take a picture of the engine front plate when I remove this pump because the small hole seems to be in a very inconvenient place.
